A Microsoft engineer noticed something was off on a piece of software he worked on. He soon discovered someone was probably trying to gain access to computers all over the world.

Microsoft and OpenAI said the A.I. had helped groups with ties to China, Russia, North Korea and Iran mostly with routine tasks.

The hackers appeared to be trying to learn what the company knew about them, a regulatory filing said.
